A two step dance of awakening
"I teach a two step dance of awakening. The first step is to choose the present moment as the truth of life. More and more each day, you choose to be present, rather than lost in thought. This means that you will have to choose to be present many times each day, until you become so fundamentally present that it is no longer necessary to choose. Your natural state is Presence. To be present and fully awake is simple. It is immediate. It requires no practice. It is a gentle remembering.
But to remain present in your day to day life and in your relationships is not so simple. Most people can only remain present for short periods of time. It is not long before you are unwillingly pulled out of Presence, back into the world of the mind. Once again, you are limited by past emotional wounds and limiting beliefs. Once again, you become lost in your past and future. Once again, you become entangled in your relationships. Once again you are caught in a world of illusion.
That is why the second step of this two step dance of awakening, is necessary. I refer to the second step as "doing the work."
The second step involves bringing to consciousness all the ways that you are pulled out of Presence. What are the hooks that pull you back into the world of the mind? What is preventing you from becoming permanently and fundamentally established in Presence? Until these questions are answered, how can you awaken, other than for a few short moments every now and then?
"The first step leads to Presence. The second step leads to Mastery."
