Connect your incoming telephone line to your audio system or boom box.
Some people like to snuggle up on their favorite couch or even in their bed and prefer a phone right to their ear. Others listen with a speaker phone. But if you would like the room filled with Leonard's voice, this is how to connect your phone to your audio system. It is worth the effort.
What you will need:
- Any phone with a headphone jack.
- A connecting audio cable, with matching connectors to connect your phone and your audio system.
The simplest approach is to take your phone into a local electronics store with the knowledge of the audio cable length you will need and what kind of jack or jacks you will need to plug into your audio system. The line out from your phone is a single line output (most probably a standard 3/32" (3.5 mm) jack.) Check you audio system to determine what kind of line in jacks you have. On a regular audio system, on the back panel, you will have left and right RCA input jacks. In this case, you will need some kind of adaptor between single output from the telephone into the dual input into your audio system. Just explain this to the guy at the store.
Some audio amplifiers have an easy access front panel jack for temporary accessory hookups such as what you want to do here. Usually this would be a 1/4" standard phono jack. In this case you will need a single 1/4" male stereo plug to plug into the audio front panel.
If your player is a portable boom box with provision for external inputs, it may be also require RCA type plugs or it may use miniature phono plugs (3/32"). If unsure, take the boom box into the store.
That's it! Plug it all together, connect with someone on your phone and test it before an Evening Teaching Session.
Another alternative, not quite as elegant as hooking up to your stereo system, but a step up from the Speaker Phone option on most phones is to use a conference room speaker phone, like a Poly Com phone which you can purchase at Hello Direct.
