Question 22

What is SPACE? Is it created?

Answer

Your question is an intriguing one.

Essentially it requires a mystical response that leads you into a direct experience of space. If you go outside at various times throughout the day and in various locations and feel the question within you, you will come closer to the answer in a mystical way. Connect with the space all around you and inside you. Be fully present with the sky. Sense the infinite nature of existence. It will be an experience in silence. It will be an experience of the infinite and the Eternal. And not one word will be spoken. Not one thought will arise. Just a sense of infinite, eternal space and an all-embracing Oneness.

Trying to define space is like trying to define God. Any attempt to do so will take you into the limited world of the thinking mind.

Space is both absolute and relative.

To the extent that it is absolute, space has always existed and will always exist. It is infinite and it is Eternal. Everything in existence came into existence and continues to exist within the context of space. Nothing can exist outside of space. And when everything ceases to exist, space will remain. Space is like the pure consciousness of God with nothing in it.

If space ceased to exist, what would remain? It would have to be nothingness. And what is space other than nothingness. Nothingness is the field into which everything arises and exists.

To the extent that space is relative, it is like time. Just like time gives us a sense of the difference between now and then, space gives us a sense of the difference between here and there.

Is space created? In its relative sense, space is created by the functioning of the mind. Ultimately it is an illusion. In its absolute sense, it is impossible to answer that question. It is like asking "If God is the Creator of everything, then who or what created God!!" God is. Space is. I am. Nothing more can be said.
