Question 38

If all that exists is Oneness, and the individual separate entity is merely an illusion, then why would it be necessary for an illusion to "own" their feelings and what they've apparently "become"? How can an illusion take any responsibility? Isn't all that is, just Oneness expressing itself?

Answer

If you are fully present and awake in Oneness, then what you say is true. In Oneness, there is no separate entity, there are no feelings from the past to own, and there is no 'becoming' when one is truly present. There is no need to take responsibility for your self and everything is Oneness expressing itself. If you can remain fundamentally present, then all these things I speak of are irrelevant.

However, if you are unable to remain fundamentally present in your day to day living and in your relationships, and if you cannot remain awake in the realization of Oneness, then you are caught in a world of separation. You are caught in the past and future world of the mind. You are caught in endless unconscious thought. Oneness is not expressing itself here. You are caught in a world of illusion.

In order to release yourself, you will have to bring that whole world of illusion, and how you are caught in it, into consciousness. This involves taking responsibility for your self at many levels. You will have to own who you have become within this world of illusion. You will have to empty out all those feelings repressed within you from your past, and particularly your childhood. You will have to see through the seduction and temptations of the ego. You will have to free yourself from the energy of judgment. You will have to bring consciousness to how you lose yourself in others.

These are all ways to bring illusion into consciousness, for it is only when illusion remains unconscious that it has any power over you. By bringing it all to consciousness, you are arising in Mastery, which is essential for true liberation.

If you are already fundamentally present and awake in Oneness as you live your life, and if your mind is mostly silent apart from those times that you are consciously choosing to think, you can ignore that part of my teaching which deals with liberating yourself from the prison that is the world of the mind and ego. You are already free.

But there are many who are not free and they would be wise to consider carefully these steps to freedom. One of the main obstacles to awakening is an ego that has ingested spiritual concepts as truth, and has become spiritualized. The most difficult illusion to overcome is the illusion that we are awake, when we are not.
